A clutch and flywheel: the parts and the gearbox out, with the rear main seal checked and the spigot bearing replaced while everything is apart.

We are an independent parts supplier. We are not BMW AG or MINI, we are not appointed by them, and BMW and MINI are their trademarks. What we sell are parts that fit those cars, described as such. Every listing states the chassis codes and engine codes it fits, the production date range, which quality tier you are buying, the labour time the job actually takes, and whether the part needs coding to the car before it will work. Where a part is only made in plastic by the factory and fails because it is plastic, we say so and we offer the metal one.

Specification and fitment

  • Fits: 1 Series E87 F20, 3 Series E90 E91 E92 E93 F30 F31, 4 Series F32 F33, 5 Series E60 F10, X1 E84 F48, X3 E83 F25
  • Engine: N47 N57 B47 diesel, N20 B48 petrol, N52 N53 petrol, N54 N55 turbo, and N14 N18 on the Mini applications. Manual gearbox only
  • Production dates: 2004 to 2020 depending on chassis. These cars change mid production, sometimes twice in a model year, and two cars built four months apart can take different parts. Send us the last seven digits of your VIN with the order and we check the part against the build record before anything is dispatched. It takes us two minutes and it is the difference between a part that fits and a return.
  • Quality: redesigned where the original failed. On this site that usually means metal where the factory used plastic, or a reinforced guide where the original wore through, and the specification says exactly what was changed
  • Part number: cross referenced to the original equipment number for your VIN and confirmed before dispatch. We do not publish a single number against a listing that covers several build variants, because that is how people order the wrong part
  • The failure this addresses: a judder as the clutch takes up, a rattle at idle that disappears when the pedal is pressed, a biting point that has crept to the top of the travel, or a smell after a hill. The rattle is the dual mass flywheel and it is the part people try to avoid replacing
  • Labour time: six to nine hours, and on the Mini the subframe comes down
  • Coding: none required. Fit it and drive
  • Also needed: a new rear main seal, a spigot bearing, gearbox oil, new flywheel bolts which are stretch bolts and single use, and a clutch alignment tool which is in the kit
  • Torque: flywheel bolts are single use and are torqued then angled. The figures are in the instructions and they are not the same as the pressure plate bolts
  • Weight: approximately 30.1 kilograms
  • Warranty: two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • Why the flywheel goes too: a dual mass flywheel has springs and friction surfaces inside it and it wears out. Free play past the specification means it is finished, and a new clutch on a worn DMF will judder from the first week
  • Machining a DMF: cannot be done. A single mass flywheel can be skimmed, a dual mass cannot, and anybody offering to is skimming the friction face of a worn assembly
  • Solid conversion: available, and it is noisier at idle. On a car that is driven hard it is the sensible answer and on a daily commuter it is not
  • While it is out: rear main seal, spigot bearing, gearbox oil and the slave cylinder. All four are cheap and all four are the same labour

What arrives

  • the clutch plate, cover and release bearing
  • the dual mass or solid flywheel
  • new flywheel stretch bolts and pressure plate bolts
  • a rear main seal and spigot bearing
  • a clutch alignment tool
  • the labour where the fitted option is chosen

Fitting

Six to nine hours with the gearbox out, and on a Mini the subframe comes down with it. Do the rear main seal, the spigot bearing and the gearbox oil while it is apart, because every one of them is the same labour and none of them is expensive.

Which version to buy

The decision that costs people money here is trying to keep the old dual mass flywheel. It cannot be machined, it wears internally, and a new clutch bolted to a worn one will judder within weeks and put the gearbox back out at your expense. If the free play is past specification, and at 90,000 miles it usually is, the flywheel goes with it.
