Engine

Add the last seven characters of your VIN in the order notes and we check the fit before dispatch.

A gasket: every gasket that leaks on these engines in one box: valve cover, filter housing, alternator bracket and the sump.

We are an independent parts supplier. We are not BMW AG or MINI, we are not appointed by them, and BMW and MINI are their trademarks. What we sell are parts that fit those cars, described as such. Every listing states the chassis codes and engine codes it fits, the production date range, which quality tier you are buying, the labour time the job actually takes, and whether the part needs coding to the car before it will work. Where a part is only made in plastic by the factory and fails because it is plastic, we say so and we offer the metal one.

Specification and fitment

  • Fits: 1 Series E87 F20, 3 Series E46 E90 E91 E92 E93 F30 F31, 4 Series F32 F33, 5 Series E39 E60 F10, X1 E84, X3 E83 F25, X5 E53 E70, Mini R56 F56
  • Engine: chosen above. These cars change mid production, sometimes twice in a model year, and two cars built four months apart can take different parts. Send us the last seven digits of your VIN with the order and we check the part against the build record before anything is dispatched. It takes us two minutes and it is the difference between a part that fits and a return.
  • Production dates: 1998 to 2019 depending on chassis and engine
  • Quality: supplied in the manufacturer's own packaging with the manufacturer's part number on it. Worth the premium when a warranty claim or a full main dealer history depends on it, and not otherwise
  • Part number: cross referenced to the original equipment number for your VIN and confirmed before dispatch. We do not publish a single number against a listing that covers several build variants, because that is how people order the wrong part
  • The failure this addresses: Two gaskets account for most of the oil under a six cylinder BMW: the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. The filter housing one is the expensive one, because it drips onto the serpentine belt, and a belt that has been soaked in oil eventually shreds and gets pulled into the front crank seal. That is how a forty pound gasket becomes an engine.
  • Labour time: one to three hours for the common gaskets, eight to fourteen for a cylinder head
  • Coding: none required. Fit it and drive
  • Also needed: engine oil and filter afterwards, new single use bolts where the position uses them, and a belt if the old one has been soaked in oil
  • Torque: low torques in sequence on plastic and aluminium covers. Head bolts are torqued then angled and are single use without exception
  • Weight: approximately 1.8 kilograms
  • Warranty: two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • The belt: if the oil filter housing gasket has been leaking, the serpentine belt has been soaked. Replace it. An oil soaked belt shreds and the debris gets drawn into the front crank seal, which turns a forty pound job into a front of engine strip
  • Find the leak first: oil on the underside of a car has usually travelled a long way from where it started. A UV dye kit is on our tools page and it costs less than one wrong gasket
  • While it is apart: the valve cover gasket and the filter housing gasket are adjacent jobs on most of these engines. Do both
  • Rear main seal: gearbox out, so only ever done alongside a clutch or a timing chain, never on its own

What arrives

  • every gasket, seal and O ring in the job
  • single use bolts where the position needs them
  • a fitting tool where the seal needs one
  • instructions with torque figures and sequences

Fitting

One to three hours on the common ones. Torque plastic and aluminium covers low and in sequence, and replace the serpentine belt if it has been sitting under a filter housing leak, because an oil soaked belt shreds and takes the front crank seal with it.

Which version to buy

Find the leak before you buy the gasket. Oil on the underside of a car has travelled, and the two gaskets that account for most of it are the valve cover and the oil filter housing. A UV dye kit costs about twenty pounds and is on our tools page, and it is cheaper than one wrong gasket and the afternoon that goes with it. Two gaskets account for most of the oil under a six cylinder BMW: the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. The filter housing one is the expensive one, because it drips onto the serpentine belt, and a belt that has been soaked in oil eventually shreds and gets pulled into the front crank seal. That is how a forty pound gasket becomes an engine.
