Remanufactured Turbocharger with a Sump and Strainer Service in OE Supplier
Add the last seven characters of your VIN in the order notes and we check the fit before dispatch.
A remanufactured turbo: the sump off, the strainer cleaned and the pickup checked, which is the only way to be sure the new turbo will get oil.
We are an independent parts supplier. We are not BMW AG or MINI, we are not appointed by them, and BMW and MINI are their trademarks. What we sell are parts that fit those cars, described as such. Every listing states the chassis codes and engine codes it fits, the production date range, which quality tier you are buying, the labour time the job actually takes, and whether the part needs coding to the car before it will work. Where a part is only made in plastic by the factory and fails because it is plastic, we say so and we offer the metal one.
Specification and fitment
- Fits: 1 Series E87 F20, 3 Series E90 E91 E92 E93 F30 F31, 4 Series F32 F33, 5 Series E60 F10, X1 E84 F48, X3 E83 F25, Mini R56 F56 where stated
- Engine: N47 N57 B47 diesel, N20 N26 B48 petrol, N54 N55 B58 turbo petrol, and N14 N18 on the Mini applications
- Production dates: 2007 to 2020 depending on chassis. These cars change mid production, sometimes twice in a model year, and two cars built four months apart can take different parts. Send us the last seven digits of your VIN with the order and we check the part against the build record before anything is dispatched. It takes us two minutes and it is the difference between a part that fits and a return.
- Quality: made by the firm that supplies the vehicle manufacturer, in that firm's own box rather than a dealer box. Identical part, identical line, no dealer margin, and this is what we would fit ourselves
- Part number: cross referenced to the original equipment number for your VIN and confirmed before dispatch. We do not publish a single number against a listing that covers several build variants, because that is how people order the wrong part
- The failure this addresses: loss of boost, a whistle that has turned into a scream, blue smoke on overrun, oil in the intercooler, or a limp mode with an underboost fault. A turbo almost never fails for its own reasons: it fails because of oil supply, oil quality or something that went through it
- Labour time: four to six hours, and a further hour if the sump has to come off
- Coding: no coding, but the adaptation values want resetting with a diagnostic tool afterwards or the car will run on the old learned figures for a while. On the electronic actuator versions the actuator is calibrated to the turbo on the bench and must not be swapped between units
- Also needed: oil feed and return lines, a new gasket set, engine oil and filter, and the exhaust manifold nuts, which will not come off twice
- Torque: manifold nuts to the figure and in the sequence, both in the instructions. A warped manifold face is a leak that sounds exactly like a failing turbo
- Weight: approximately 15.8 kilograms
- Warranty: two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first on the unit. A surcharge applies on remanufactured units and is refunded when your old unit comes back to us. The core has to be complete and it has to be the same part number, and we include a prepaid label and the packaging the new one came in.
- What gets replaced on a remanufactured unit: the complete core assembly, both bearing sets, the thrust assembly, every seal, the wastegate arm and bushings. The housings are cleaned, measured and reused, which is normal and is why the casting carries a lifetime warranty
- Balancing: every unit is balanced on a VSR machine to within 0.1 grams and the balance certificate is in the box
- Why they fail twice: a coked oil feed line. If the old turbo failed and the feed line was not replaced, the new one will go the same way, and no warranty covers that. The line is in every kit here
- Running in: idle for two minutes after fitting before any load, and change the oil again at 1,000 miles
What arrives
- the remanufactured turbocharger
- a new oil feed line and return
- a full gasket set and manifold nuts
- the VSR balance certificate
- fitting instructions and torque figures
- a prepaid core return label and packaging
Fitting
Four to six hours, plus an hour if the sump comes off. The single most important step is the oil feed line, and the second is the two minutes of idling before load. Choose the fitted option and we do the feed line, check the strainer, and change the oil again at a thousand miles at no charge.
Which version to buy
Remanufactured against new is genuinely close on a turbo, because the part that wears is the core and a remanufactured unit gets a new one. What separates a remanufactured turbo from a reconditioned one is whether it was balanced and flow tested, and whether the actuator was calibrated to that unit. Ours are and ours is, and the certificate is in the box. A surcharge applies on remanufactured units and is refunded when your old unit comes back to us. The core has to be complete and it has to be the same part number, and we include a prepaid label and the packaging the new one came in.
